Allison Estle, Valerie Hill, and Anna Keane

The Taliban is an Islamic fundamentalist group who took control of Afghanistan, imposing strict laws and brutality toward the citizens.

Before the Taliban:

  • 25 year civil war in Afghanistan

  • Corruption in the government

  • Finished a war with Russia

  • People had more rights (especially women)

Rise of the Taliban

  • Taliban are an Islamic extremist group, who took control from 1996-2001

  • The work Taliban means “seeker” or student”

  • Taliban originated from Afghanistan refugees and madrassah students in Pakistan.

  • After the Soviet invasion in 1979, under Mullah Mohammed Omar the Taliban took over Afghanistan from the Soviets.

  • In 1994, fought against non-Pashtuns warlords to control the countryside of Afghanistan. Pashtun villagers then saw them as protectors and against the warlord abuses.

  • By 1996, Taliban took control over Kabul and formed a government.

  • The new Islamic regime banned music, kite-flying, television, and prevented girls from education.

  • This also imposed capital crimes.

  • United Arab, Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and neighboring Pakistan.

  • The Al-Qaeda network provided financial support to the Taliban.

  • The New Afghanistan regime also allowed bin Laden and his followers a safe haven in eastern Afghanistan.

  • Most “ordinary” Taliban did not have interest in al-Qaeda’s program.

Perception of the Taliban

  • When the Taliban arrived, they were perceived positively.

  • They did not tolerate corruption of the government which was a large problem in Afghanistan for many years prior.

  • The Taliban provided a sense of stability for Afghanistan, stopping the fighting that was going on within the country, a 25 year civil war.

  • People were happy to see an end to the fighting.

  • The Taliban took over so easily because Afghanistan was vulnerable at the time.

  • It did not take long to realize how dangerous the Taliban would be.

  • Once they began imposing such extreme rules, the public opinion of the Taliban was largely negative.

  • Cutting off limbs

There are no trials or judges. If the Taliban thinks a person is guilty, they will be punished as the Talban sees fit.
